He reported a history of tick bite and rash in 2002. The knee pain and other symptoms rapidly improved over the next two weeks. He received a short course of antibiotics at that time. After two weeks he reported that the antibiotics were causing nightmares and insomnia. Then one week later he complained of confusion and unsteadiness.

I have to say that the best I feel is on Plaquenil and doxycycline, with steroids occasionally. I have a flare. I wish that I could find one Dr that would treat me the same as a doctor in Gainesville Florida treated me. so that I could continue to feel better. Plaquenil alone does at first give you night terrors and insomnia. It seems to be an extremely helpful drug when used as part of a multi-drug regimen for chronic Lyme disease or Lyme Disease Complex, as some call it. Typically it is added to regimens which include Amoxicillin or Ceftin plus Biaxin or Zithromax and Plaquenil or Doxycycline / Minocyline. The Biaxin/Plaquenil success may have been treating Lyme though. There are some people that have gotten rid of babs with Bactrim and Biaxin though. Maybe Plaquenil could be added to that too check interactions.

He continued to improve rapidly once more with a cessation of neurocognitive symptoms. When I saw him initially he complained of knee pain and swelling, fatigue, generalized arthralgia (joint pain), numbness and tingling and an irregular heart beat. I diagnosed a "brain Herx." I added Plaquenil back, as well as Welchol, presumptively to remove "neurotoxins." I also reduced the dose of Amoxicillin and Minocin.

Hi Chris, welcome to this forum. Of course it is hard to say what the cause is of the increase of symptoms. But I remember I was also feeling a bit worse in the first weeks after I had started taking clarithromycin and hydroxychloroquine. Plaquenil can cause eye issues, good to get regular eye check up if you take it for a few months or more. which I have not done. yet Sounds like you got everything covered with the Biaxin and the Doxy, probably a good combo. I hope those antibiotics help you make some progress. Longer-Term Antibiotics Won't Ease This. Biaxin and hydroxychloroquine. One Lyme disease researcher said he doubts that most patients with so-called chronic Lyme disease ever had Lyme.
