How does plaquenil work on the immune system

They are most common among people with weak immune systems. People with certain health conditions may need to take medications with side effects that can weaken your immune system and put you at risk for fungal infections.

Aug 25, 2011 I'm not a healthcare provider, but I do take Plaquenil and just found out from another user of it that it does suppress the immune system. I didn't know that when I started taking it for Sjogren's in November 2011. In January 2012, I had a horrible cold, stomach flu and then SHINGLES. Fungal infections can range from mild to life-threatening. Specifically, corticosteroids and TNF (tumor necrosis factor) inhibitors are two types of medications that can increase your chances of getting a fungal infection.

  3. Nov 15, 2016 I have been taking Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine for about 10 months. Since August I’ve had some strange infections. First I got shingles. Then I started with a bacterial vaginosis. I discontinued the Plaquenil for about a week when I was diagnosed with shingles and I thought it may have helped it not be so bad. The bacterial vaginosis just won’t go away. I use metro gel and it’s goes.

Plaquenil tablets contain the active ingredient hydroxychloroquine, which is a type of medicine called a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. I doubt it is the Plaquenil affecting your immune system, but the actual Lupus itself as it can affects the white blood cells and lower them so we get every infection going. You need to speak to your rheumy for more clarification in your case. Plaquenil itself probably does not have a direct affect on your immune system - it is a DMARD and is not considered to be an immunosuppressant. However, many with active autoimmune diseases feel that they are not succeptible to many of the common viruses that they are exposed to - somewhat of a silver lining.
