    Plaquenil and shingles vaccine

Shingrix was FDA-approved last fall; the CDC recommends that people age 50 and older get two doses between two and six months apart. The CDC now recommends Shingrix over the Zostavax, an older shingles vaccine that’s been approved for people age 60 and older since 2006.

As far as I understand it, the Shingrix vaccine can't give you shingles if you've never had chicken pox, as it is made of just one of the envelope proteins of the virus plus a couple of enhancers. So none of the virus genetic material is put into your system, either dead or 'alive'. Pneumococcal vaccination The most common pneumococcal vaccines our patients need are the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine PCV13 or Prevnar 13 and the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine PPSV23 or Pneumovax. There are very few studies looking at pneumococcal vaccination in patients with SLE 2-4. The shingles vaccine can safely be given with multiple inactivated virus vaccines such as an influenza vaccine or pneumococcal vaccine on a single day. Controversy surrounds the issue of whether TNF inhibitors increase the risk of shingles.

There’s no question that people who have immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, such as different kinds of arthritis, have a higher risk of coming down with shingles than otherwise healthy adults, says Elizabeth Kirchner, CNP, of the Cleveland Clinic’s rheumatologic and immunologic diseases department. But if you have an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, the jury’s still out on whether the new shingles vaccine is safe for you.

  7. The risk of shingles is increased in rheumatic diseases. Therefore, some experts encourage the administration of Herpes zoster vaccine to patients under low-dose immunosuppressive therapy. However, it should be noted that the cumulative effects of more than one low-dose immunosuppressive drug could pose a contraindication for live vaccines.

The shingles vaccine can be an effective way to help prevent shingles. Like with the chickenpox vaccine, getting it doesn’t guarantee you won’t get shingles. But it will most likely reduce the length of time and severity of the disease if you do get it. Immunisation for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Immunisation is an important issue for people with rheumatoid arthritis RA as they experience infections more frequently than the general population, and these infections tend to be more serious. The original shingles vaccine, called Zostavax, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration FDA in 2006 for use in adults aged 60 years and older. In 2011, the FDA expanded the use of the vaccine to adults 50 and older.

Does this explain generic plaquenil shortage? Hydroxychloroquine is the generic for Plaqunil, but some of the suppliers are low on the medicine or it's nonexistent. They had to switch the pill I was taking a few months ago. It used to be oblong and now it is round and about the size of my iron pill, making me think I am taking the same pill twice.
