    Allergic to plaquenil lupus

It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant). The United States Center for Disease Control provides updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world.

I also had a reaction to Plaquenil when I was first diagnosed with lupus. I had a rash and hives all over my body, it was itchy and painful! My doctor prescribed me Chloroquine, which is similar to plaquenil but it is made slightly differently and I haven’t had any issues! I have been on it for years and it has worked for me. I had been taking plaquenil since April for my lupus and sjogrens. It was working really well and just recently my rheumy told that I was in remission. I felt great. Then I had an allergic reaction to the plaquenil - a rash all over my body, neck, arms and legs. I stopped taking it 1 week ago. Antimalarial agents were first used for lupus in 1894 when Payne treated a case of discoid lupus with quinine. It was not until 1951 that Page reported the benefits of quinacrine for lupus. The use of hydroxychloroquine for the cutaneous manifestations of DM were first described by Woo et al in 1984.

This medication is also used, usually with other medications, to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) when other medications have not worked or cannot be used. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs.

Three anti-malarial drugs are prescribed for lupus symptoms. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is the most commonly prescribed because it is generally believed to cause fewer side effects; chloroquine Aralen has a reputation for more serious side effects, but it may be prescribed in situations where hydroxychloroquine cannot be used. What are the side effects of Plaquenil? The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, skin rash or black spots when you look at things. Most side effects will go away when your body gets used to the medicine.

What is the blood work protocol while taking. Blood tests for monitoring of methtrexate consist of CBC and platelet count as well as liver function tests to keep track of potential liver and bone marrow damage. The tests can be done every 3 to 6 months or as needed as determined by any symptoms. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine rarely causes blood problems but an annual eye exam is important.
